INSIDE THE BOOK

About this book

The 7‑7‑7 Rule for Game Design breaks down the creative process into three simple layers that help designers focus on what truly matters: player goals, core mechanics, and moment‑to‑moment engagement. Through examples, exercises, and real‑world insights, the book shows how constraints can unlock creativity and lead to more polished, intentional game experiences. Whether you're prototyping your first idea or refining a complex system, the 7‑7‑7 rule offers a reliable guide for making design decisions that feel purposeful and player‑centered.

A genuine pleasure to read

Excellent from start to finish. No filler, no padding.

I picked this up after getting stuck on a project and it turned out to be exactly the right book at the right time. It is denser than the page count suggests, and I found myself slowing down around the middle. The early chapters move quickly through material I already knew, but the later sections were genuinely new to me. One of those books that pays for itself within the first few chapters. Highly recommended.

Worth every page

Finally, a book that treats game design with the care it deserves.

I had been on the fence about this one for a while, and I should have bought it sooner. The examples are small enough to type out and experiment with, which is exactly what I want from a book like this. Some of the diagrams are dense and I had to reread a few sections, though that may just be me. This is the book I wish had existed when I started working with game design.
